Nash Square was a accepted cruising spot (a place for gay or pansexual men to meet other men for trysts) in the 20th century prior to and throughout queer liberation.

Several places have been identified as cruising spots in the middle of the 20th century, including certain stretches of Hillsborough, Fayetteville, and W. Hargett Streets. Cruising also took place in public restrooms in the Sir Walter Hotel (400 Fayetteville St.), the Hotel Carolina (demolished), the Museum of Natural History (Annex to 2 W. Edenton St.), North Hills Mall (demolished), Crabtree Valley Mall (altered), and Harrelson Hall (demolished) at North Carolina State University. Nash Square retains the most morality of all these places and is the most publicly accessible.

Phase I of this project created of a preliminary roster of Raleigh’s LGBTQIA+ historic places. Now, Phase II of this project will take a closer look at 20 of these existing places. The evaluation will include a short site history and a current photo. Our team will evaluate each site’s historic significance within the context of Raleigh’s larger LGBTQIA+ community.

We are seeking the community’s input on which of these historic sites should obtain a closer peer. We want to know which places on the list are most essential to the larger LGBTQIA+ community. Which places are you curious to comprehend more about? Where would you prefer to see the project’s limited resources focused?
