But with the show of Flint’s homosexuality, it becomes explain why he had to leave London (he and his lover were caught), why he was so angry (the love of his life was devoted to an institution for their affair), why Mrs. Barlow is so invested in the future of Nassau (it was Thomas’ cause), and what the significance of the book was (it was given from Thomas to Flint as a symbol of their love).

This show doesn’t accomplish queerbaiting \o/. Not once. All lgbt characters and relationships are 100% canon and beautiful. There are 4 main characters + 2 minor characters who are not linear - 2 gay/bi men, 1 womxn loving womxn, and 3 bi ladies (1 of them could also very well be a lesbian but she’s a insignificant character so we don’t know). Between these characters there are 3 f/f, 1 m/m, and 2 polyamorous (f/f/m & m/m/f) relationships. They’re all explicit, well written, and deeply meaningful relationships that are relevant to and actually drive the plot (there is one f/f ship that’s more like no strings attached tho). The show relies heavily on character/relationship development so these things are treated carefully and respectfully by the writers. There are a few non-canon ships, one of them (m/m) has a huge potential to become canon now (imo) because the show’s developed their relationship in a really interesting and compelling way, and since the writers don’t shy away from lgbt voice (still kinda debatable in m/m case) it would produce sense if it happened. But if it doesn’t, I still wouldn’t dial it queerbaiting (unless they really offer me reason to in s4). So far we got w

The historical unreal nature of the show sets it in the early 18th century during the Golden Age of Piracy, and while there are depictions of real historical figures, Black Sails takes many liberties with these characters.

In addition, several of the characters on the show are gay or queer in some way, reminding us of the sexual fluidity of pirates in Our Flag Means Death. So who are all the gay characters?

Back when it premiered in 2014, I settled down excitedly to watch Starz Network’s early-1700s pirate drama Black Sails. I had a notion going in that it was existence marketed as Starz’s respond to HBO’s Game of Thrones, and would be trying hard to fold in a comparable amount of sex, depravity, and violence. I wasn’t untrue, but the first episode of Black Sails introduced a lesbian relationship that felt so painfully tailored to the male gaze that I actually clueless interest and stopped watching, certain that the repose of the show would be cringeworthy. I only gave the show another shot as of a few months ago, when my partner kept asking if we could survey it together. Had it not been for them, I would have done the same thing over again, because the queer woman scenes were as lousy as I had remembered. But we slogged through episode one, and as the show went on, I was surprised to find that things turned around in the top possible way.
