Now that I’ve seen the pilot of Yellowjackets, I can tell you a variety of ways you could possess sold me on giving this present a try. Gender non-conforming actress Jasmin Savoy Brown! One of my childhood crushes, Christina Ricci! Lgbtq+ female main character! Big Little Lies meets The Wilds! Those all would have hooked me, easily. But I was sold by learning it also features Sarah Desjardin, who first charmed me in her queer role on the devastatingly underappreciated show Impulseand then later as a deliciously malicious prep school teen on Riverdale. And if it’s any indication how much I enjoyed this first episode, by the time Sarah’s ethics appeared on screen, I was so invested that I had completely forgotten why I started it in the first place, yelping with joy when I saw her.
All I knew about this show going into it was that it would toe the line between standard Showtime drama and thriller, and honestly I’m glad I didn’t really know anything else. That said, I’m about to spill some pilot spoilers on you to try to get you to watch, so if you’re already sold, now’s the period to jump ship.

There is a lot of darkness and trauma in Yellowjackets, from plane crashes and starvation to cannibalism and cults. But, amidst all the horror, there is a lesbian love story that defies the “Bury Your Gays” trope. Against all odds and the power of the wilderness, teens Van (Liv Hewson) and Taissa (Jasmin Savoy Brown) have a intimacy that, according to the actors who play them, is the “bright spot” of the show.
“Our characters are the bright see in a show about trauma,” Jasmin told The Advocate. She added that, often, the queer characters are the vehicle in which trauma is discussed in television, whether that is the trauma of coming out or the trauma of a parent kicking you out for your sexuality. “But [in Yellowjackets] the trauma is this plane crash, and these girls are in love, and that’s lightness within that darkness.”
Jasmin also expressed gratitude towards the writers for creating something so positively sapphic. Her co-star, Liv, added that the visibility Van and Taissa provide for the queer community is incredibly important to both of

Overview
In 1996, a team of New Jersey high school soccer players flew to Seattle for a national tournament. While over Canada, the plane crashed deep in the wilderness and the remaining team members were left to remain for 19 months.
Yellowjackets tells the story of the girls who survived the plane crash deep in the Ontario wilderness. The series chronicles their descent from a complicated but thriving team to warring, cannibalistic clans, while also tracking the lives the surviving women have attempted to piece their lives back together 25 years later.
Sophie Nélisse, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Sophie Thatcher and Sammi Hanratty star as the teenagers, while Melanie Lynskey, Tawny Cypress, Christina Ricci and Juliette Lewis portray their adult counterparts as they reveal the correctness about their survival.
