Attorney General Pam Bondi Asks Determine To Continue Blocking Gay Marriage In Florida

  Same-sex couples should continue to be prevented from getting married in Florida until a legal battle plays out about the constitutionality of the state's gay-marriage forbid, Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a federal-court filing Friday.

Chair Grassley, Ranking Member Durbin, and members of the committee: The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights is submitting this statement for the record in today’s hearing to voice our strong opposition to the nomination of the Honorable Pamela Jo Bondi to assist as the next attorney general of the United States. We urge the Senate to reject Ms. Bondi’s nomination.

Well, it’s happened. A federal judge has ruled that Florida’s antigay marriage exclude is unconstitutional.

In his notion, Judge Robert L. Hinkle compared the ban on interracial marriage to the ban on same-sex marriage, writing that today the arguments against interracial marriage “seem an obvious pretext for racism.”

 “When observers gaze back 50 years from now, the arguments supporting Florida’s ban on homosexual marriage,” he wrote, “will again seem an clear pretext for discrimination.”

Which means that Miami will soon be gay-marriage capital of the world and Mickey and Donald and Minnie and Daisy can finally run off together! Because surely the people of Florida see that the tide is turning away from bigotry. And surely Florida’s elected officials wouldn’t waste their time and resources defending what is clearly a discriminatory law.

Ha ha ha. Just kidding. We are talking about Florida, after all.
