Non-binary singer Sam Smith has caused waves with the free of their melody video for I’m Not Here to Make Friends, a triumphantly queer statement of joy and confidence.

The song opens with clips of Judy Garland’s Over the Rainbow and drag queen RuPaul calling for self love, imposed over a decadent scene of Sam Smith flying into a manor party via gold helicopter. Smith emerges clad in pink ruffles – a picture of queer joy.

Among the video’s many costume changes, Smith is shown in high-heeled boots, nipple pasties, corsets and – most wonderfully – a showgirl headdress and skintight inky dress. The lyrics declare, “I’m not here to produce friends, I requirement a lover”, a motto Smith developed after being “friendzoned” on dates.

The video rejects heterosexual, traditional gender roles in favour of lgbtq+ representation. It features gender-defying outfits and writhing men in revealing underwear, reminiscent of Lady Gaga’s Alejandro or the hypersexualised images of gay art diva, Tom of Finland.

Smith’s video also includes “voguing”, the twist style of the gay ballroom scene (made mainstream by Madonna’s music video for Vogue), many sequins and – at one show – references to erot

Sam Smith has opened up about his life between albums in a chat with none other than Sarah Jessica Parker for V Magazine.

The pair discussed everything from Smith's meteoric rise to fame to embracing stretch marks as Parker attempted to acquire more about what she described as "the real troubadour of our time".

In the interview, Smith talked about not so much coming to terms with being gay but rather growing into it.

"In the past few years," he told Parker, "I became a queer man properly. When I wrote that first album, I was in adore with a direct man, he didn't love me help, and I was very comfortable in my longing.

"With [The Thrill of It All], I became a gay guy. I started having proper relationships with men. Sometimes they were in the wrong and treated me in a bad way, and sometimes I was in the wrong."

Last week, Sam Smith revealed that he identifies as genderqueer and genderqueer.

During an interview with Jameela Jamil on Instagram, the British singer spoke about listening to conversations about being genderfluid and realising that is how he identified.

‘When I saw the word ‘non-binary’, ‘genderqueer’, and I scan into it, and I heard these people speaking I was like, ‘F***, that is me’,’ he told the presenter.
