In their first public appearance together, Harris highlighted Walz’s decision to be the tall school’s first faculty advisor for the new Gay Vertical Alliance in 1999: “At a period when acceptance was difficult to detect for LGBTQ students, Tim knew the signal that it would send to have a football coach get involved… So he signed up to be the group’s faculty advisor,” Harris said. “And as students said, he made the school a safe place for everybody.”

GLAAD, the world’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, gender diverse, and queer (LGBTQ) media representation organization, is responding to Vice President Kamala Harris accepting the nomination of her party for President of the United States tonight.
Harris included LGBTQ Americans in her acceptance speech among the fundamental freedoms at stake in the election: “The freedom to live safe from gun abuse in our schools, communities, and places of worship. The liberty to love who you affection openly and with pride. The freedom to breathe clean wind and drink clean water and live free from the pollution that fuels the climate crisis. And the freedom that unlocks all of the others, the freedom to vote.”
