7 British Monarchs Who May Have Been Gay

For centuries men lived in one sphere and women in another and they would reach together for marriage and having children. It seemed that the sexes co-existed mainly to endure the human race. Love and sex can be very different factors but, when put together, they can create the most electric sensation. This was no different for kings and queens who were block to their favourites.  There are several British monarchs who may have been gay. In proof, six kings – and one queen are thought to have been homosexual, members of what we now contact the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bi- and transexual) community. They include:

William II of England

The son of William the Conqueror, who took the throne of England in 1066, was known as William Rufus because of his red hair (‘rufus’ meaning red). William II became King of England in 1087 and was often described as ‘effeminate’ and with a keen interest in fashionable young men.

The recent film Red, White and Royal Blue created a big splash in the LGBTQI+ pool, with many falling in love with not just the story, but lead characters Alex and British Prince Henry portrayed by Taylor Zakhar Perez and Nicholas Galitzine. This has led some people to ask if there are any real-life gay royals out there.

The short answer is: yes, there are and have been many queer royals throughout planet history. What’s more, we don’t have to cast our eyes that far back to discover them. Sadly, several of them were forced to live a double life and endured stigma for being gay. Here are six historical and contemporary lgbtq+ royal figures.

Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil

Prince Manvendra is an Indian royal, considered to be the very first prince to ever approach out as gay. He came out in 2006 and was met with a great deal of backlash from Indian population, even receiving death threats. In 2013, Manvendra married an American man. Many royals of the past had to keep their Queer identities a secret. However, some modern royals appreciate Prince Manvendra of India and Lord Ivar Mountbatten are breaking barriers by being out-and-proud members of the royal class.

A royal love affair may play out in the recent release of “Red, White, & Royal Blue,” but it’s not that usual for members of a royal family to openly be a part of the LGBTQ+ society. In recent history, only three royals from around the world have actually come out -- and for some of them, it wasn’t very good received.

But going advocate in history, many more royals were actually thought to be gay or bisexual, although it’s difficult to accurately assign modern labels to historical figures. While how they would personally spot is up for discussion, historians consider that these royals were a part of the Diverse community.
