Elmo Voice Kevin Conflict Denies Having Sex With Underage Boy
Nov. 12, 2012— -- Kevin Clash, the man who has been the voice of Elmo on Sesame Street for 28 years is taking a abandon of absence after allegations surfaced that he had a relationship with a 16-year-old boy.
"I am a gay male. I have never been ashamed of this or tried to hide it, but felt it was a personal and private matter. I had a relationship with the accuser. It was between two consenting adults and I am deeply mournful that he is trying to characterize it as something other than what it was," Conflict said in a statement issued to ABC News.
"I am taking a split from Sesame Workshop to deal with this false and defamatory allegation," he said.
The alleged underage relationship was brought to the attention of Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit company that produces the beloved children's present, in June by the alleged victim, who was by then 23 years old.
Sesame Workshop said it took the allegation "very seriously" and took "immediate action," but after an investigation, which included interviews with Clash and his accuser, found the claims to be "unsubstanti
I’ve been worried ever since I heard the allegation that Kevin Clash, the puppeteer behind “Sesame Street’s” Elmo, had had a relationship with a 16-year-old insignificant when Clash was 45.
First, it was a earnest charge. Second, although the accuser has since recanted and said he was in fact of age, I fear the incident may reduce the chance of “Sesame Street” including LGBT characters any time in the foreseeable future. I hope I’m wrong.
“Sesame Street” premiered in 1969, the same year as the Stonewall Riots that marked the initiate of the LGBT-rights movement. It was a television show for a new generation, not terrified to be broadly inclusive of multiple races, ethnicities, languages and physical abilities. Over the years, it has addressed sensitive topics such as coping with a parent’s military deployment to differences among children from Northern Ireland and the Middle East. The South African version even has an HIV-positive Muppet. But the show has avoided LGBT inclusion (Bert and Ernie’s rumored association notwithstanding).
In the 1982 segment, “We All Sing the Same Song,” a child sings, “I’ve got one daddy” and another responds, “I’ve got two.” Given the era, though, it rema

Elmo's right-hand man Kevin Clash says he's done nothing wrong.
Clash, who's performed as beloved Elmo for 27 years, was granted a quit of absence from Sesame Street Monday after allegations that he engaged in inappropriate sexual behavior with an underage boy. Later in the afternoon, Disagree, 52, confirmed to E! News that he did have "a relationship with the [now 23-year-old] accuser," but says it was not an illegal one.
"It was between two consenting adults and I am deeply saddened that he is trying to characterize it as something other than what it was," Clash said in a statement, denying accusations that he had sex with his accuser when he was just a 16-year-old boy. "I am taking a break from Sesame Workshop to deal with this false and defamatory allegation."
Clash also confirmed he is "a gay man" and has "never been ashamed of this or tried to hide it, but felt [my connection with the accuser] was a personal and personal matter."
